Social Justice Monday at Light Streams!

I've had a bee in my bonnet to blog about fair compensation and social justice for several days now. So, for starters here are two of my favorite fair-trade sites.

Welcome to Eziba. Beautiful gifts and other droolworthy items, globally sourced and fairly compensated. Read about their ethical guidelines here. And if you really love me, you'll buy me these.

Put down that Starbucks! You should be drinking this. Give corporate coffee the finger. Drink your cuppa knowing that the individuals who grew and harvested your coffee are being paid fairly for their work.

Enjoy. Oh, and I'll be waiting for the earrings.

Thanks, Aaron for that great link! I especially like the bit about fair trade produce.

My husband used to be a field service tech for an industrial controls company. He was sent to service a machine on a banana plantation in Honduras. He was absolutely apalled at the conditions the field workers lived in. He said they were tantamount to slaves.

We have the purchasing power to make the world a better place.

I've read a bunch of stuff about their working conditions. As well, I know a local guy who came up from Guatemala, and he told me that every coffee plantation he's ever seen looks like hell.

Actually, I just got back from buying two pounds of coffee from the local free trade place. It's great stuff though really.

I get my fair trade coffee from Equal Exchange (the link I posted), through a program we have at my church. The UUA and other liberal churches support the program. Their Fellowship Blend is pretty good, for a mild cup.

I get 12 oz. of organic whole bean French Roast for $5. I'm the only coffee drinker in my house, so I don't have to buy in bulk. And it *is* good stuff. I've had very discriminating coffee drinkers over (only drink a specific blend from Kenya), and they've thoroughly enjoyed their cup.

Try Fair Trade! Or Aaron and I will just keep bugging you about it! ;0)
